 Leadership Development

More often than not leadership models offered to church leadership are nothing more than spiritualized corporate secular models. At times these models are even given the name “Servant-Leadership” but we would be hard-pressed to find anything about servant-hood in them. Scripture calls us to servant-leadership. Jesus modeled and taught it. Yet we have such difficulty getting a grip on it. Our answer to Jesus heart penetrating question after washing the Twelve’s feet in John 13:13, “Do you understand what I have done for you” is; “No, we don’t understand.”

The time has come for us to recapture and learn just what Jesus taught us about leadership in His Kingdom. It is time for local church leadership to understand what it means to lead God’s people. It is time for them to understand that they are not elected but divinely summoned and appointed. It is time to rediscover that the church leader’s responsibility is to serve God and the His people. They are called to seek and find the will of God for the particular segment of God’s people they serve and lead that people in the fulfillment of His will. It is time to learn anew that Christian leadership is not about upward mobility but about downward mobility. Church, Christian, Servant Leadership is about foot-washing.

The leadership development I offer is guiding individuals in discovering what Scripture has to say about leadership and wrestling with them about how that plays out in the life of the local church. I do not assume or propose to have all the answers. What I do offer is many years of experience and wrestling with this. Leadership development is more about journey than classroom. It is more about discipleship than workshop training. Christian leadership, servant-leadership is a school I remain in and would be honored to be invited to share with your leadership what I have learned as well as invite them to join in the journey with me.
